Coffee is a popular and well-loved drink thanks to its rich flavor. Although many people enjoy it, coffee may not be suitable for everyone, and there are other options for those who want to stay awake and focused.
Some find the caffeine in coffee too strong, while others simply dislike its taste. In reality, there are many other caffeine-containing beverages you can try. Below are five caffeine alternatives that can help you stay alert besides coffee.
1. Matcha
Matcha is a finely ground green tea powder traditionally whisked into water or added to drinks such as lattes and smoothies. A cup made with 2g of matcha powder contains between 37.8mg and 88.7mg of caffeine.
Thanks to its high content of the amino acid L-theanine, matcha offers a smooth, balanced source of energy. It’s also rich in antioxidants such as epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG), which protects cells and reduces inflammation in the body.
Matcha has an earthy, grassy flavor and can be enjoyed hot or iced, with milk and honey for added richness.

2. Black Tea
Although made from the same plant as green tea, black tea is darker and stronger because the leaves are oxidized until they turn dark, enhancing both color and flavor.
On average, a cup of black tea contains about 47mg of caffeine—roughly half the amount found in a cup of coffee.
Black tea also contains L-theanine, which promotes relaxation, and powerful antioxidants such as theaflavins and thearubigins, which support cognitive health and may help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease.
Its flavor can range from malty to fruity or smoky. You can enjoy it with honey and milk or as a refreshing iced tea.
3. Green Tea
Green tea leaves are grown under full sunlight and not shaded before harvest, giving them a slightly stronger and more bitter taste than matcha.
Each cup contains about 29.4mg of caffeine—less than matcha, but still enough to boost alertness gently. Like matcha, it’s a good source of L-theanine and antioxidants such as EGCG and other catechins, which support overall health.
Green tea has a mild grassy and subtly sweet taste. It can be enjoyed plain, slightly sweetened, or with a splash of lemon.
4. Guayusa Tea
Also known as Runa tea, Guayusa is made from the leaves of an evergreen tree native to the Amazon, traditionally brewed as a herbal tea by indigenous communities. Today, Guayusa extract is found in some natural energy drinks.
It is naturally rich in caffeine and also contains L-theanine, promoting calm, focused energy without the jitteriness of coffee. Guayusa provides antioxidants such as chlorogenic acid, which support general well-being.
